Game Mechanics and System Design

Project Brief

"You will conceptualise gameplay mechanics of your own design and produce a gameplay prototype that demonstrates the operation of these mechanics. You will evaluate the prototype in terms of its ability to demonstrate the original design. The prototype will show evidence of iterative development and balancing based on your testing and evaluation. You are free to choose whatever game type or mechanic you wish. The gameplay mechanics can be based on existing mechanics from other games, but you must show clear evidence of how these mechanics have been expanded on or developed further. "

Task 1 - Development Process and Prototype Design

Task 2 - Gameplay Prototype Project

Task 3 - Project Post Mortem Presentation

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the techniques required to design and develop gameplay prototypes
  2. Consider how gameplay prototypes are underpinned by the design of systems and mechanics
  3. Iteratively design and develop gameplay prototypes demonstrating an appreciation of required functionality and user experience
  4. Evaluate the design and implementation of a gameplay prototype
